In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.
"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was signed.
The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.
Details of the New Electoral Agreement
According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.
Broader Government Consultations Underway
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising.
Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
