Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the right to contest particular calls made by the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development follows just a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to review other situations, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
